Gills on Wheels: A Jayco Family of Companies Pathfinder Embracing the RV Lifestyle

Selling It All for the Open Road

Shane and Patty Gill, known as Gills on Wheels, made a life-changing decision in 2019 to sell everything and embark on a full-time RV journey. Initially planning to put their home on the market in March 2020, the pandemic delayed their plans until September. By October 30, 2020, they had sold their home, officially beginning their adventure on the road. Now, nearly five years later, they continue to explore the beauty of the United States in their 2025 Jayco Eagle HT Fifth Wheel 28CRT.

A Life of Travel and Adventure

With Shane’s 24-year career in the Air Force, the couple had already embraced a nomadic lifestyle, moving every two to three years and traveling extensively. Their global adventures took them across 50 countries and five continents. However, their dream was to explore the United States in an RV, allowing them to experience the country’s vast landscapes and hidden gems while bringing their home along for the ride.

When stationed overseas, RV ownership wasn’t possible, so they relied on cars, planes, and trains to fuel their wanderlust. Now, as empty nesters with their sons graduated and on their own, they have fully committed to RV life, making the most of their freedom while they are young and able to enjoy it.

The National Park Enthusiasts

One of the Gills’ greatest passions is visiting National Parks. They plan their travel routes around these incredible natural wonders, prioritizing destinations that allow them to hike, bike, kayak, paddleboard, and engage in outdoor adventures. Following warm weather as much as possible enables them to enjoy the outdoors year-round.

Their travels have taken them to 30 states, including an unforgettable 5,000-mile RV trip to Alaska. This year, their goal is to complete their journey across all 50 states, including an RV adventure in Hawaii.

Unexpected Benefits of RV Life

While Shane and Patty anticipated many of the joys of RV life, some unexpected benefits have made the journey even more special. One of the biggest surprises has been the incredible friendships they’ve formed along the way. Initially, they thought full-time RVing might feel isolating, but they quickly realized how vibrant and welcoming the RV community is. Now, they often travel alongside other full-time RVers, sharing adventures and making lasting memories.

Their trip to Alaska remains the highlight of their travels, a breathtaking journey they recommend to any RVer looking for a bucket-list adventure. This year, they are especially looking forward to exploring the northeastern states and visiting even more National Parks with their fellow full-time RV friends.

Living as Modern Nomads

The Gills fully embrace the term "Modern Nomads." Their lifestyle involves constant movement, yet they have found ways to balance adventure with moments of rest. While they initially planned their entire year in advance, they have since adopted a more flexible approach, allowing spontaneity to guide their travels. They prefer boondocking and staying in free locations like Harvest Hosts rather than being tied to strict reservations.

Their travel style is about maximizing experiences, seeing as much as possible in a short amount of time. However, they also recognize the importance of slowing down when needed, which is why they return to their stationary spot in Texas to recoup, save up and recharge for the next adventure.

The Art of Travel Planning

Patty keeps a paper calendar to loosely plan their travel itinerary, allotting a few days at each location while leaving room for changes. While she used to meticulously plan every detail, she has learned that a mix of planning and flexibility is key to a fulfilling RV lifestyle.

The couple believes in taking things slow and truly enjoying the journey—not just the destination. Their travels have strengthened their marriage, bringing them even closer as they navigate the open road together.

Lessons Learned and Advice for Aspiring RVers

Looking back, one of the biggest lessons they’ve learned is that they didn’t need such a large RV. Initially, they opted for a 43-foot camper, but they soon realized that a smaller rig would have been more practical for their needs.

For anyone considering full-time RVing, the Gills encourage taking the leap. While it may seem daunting at first, the rewards far outweigh the challenges. Their advice is to start with a smaller rig, remain flexible, and embrace the community that comes with this lifestyle. Most importantly, they emphasize enjoying the journey and making the most of every moment on the road.
