A Family’s Adventure Begins

For Gabe Rovick, the decision to buy an RV in 2024 was fueled by a deep love for travel and adventure. Having always been a road traveler and explorer, he wanted to share that passion with his wife and their 2-year-old daughter. Owning a Jayco Jay Flight SLX 174BH has allowed his family to embark on unforgettable journeys, creating lasting memories along the way.

Before stepping into the RV lifestyle, Gabe and his family were no strangers to adventure. Their travels often took them off the beaten path, relying on a rooftop or ground tent for camping in remote areas. While simple, this setup nurtured their appreciation for nature and exploration. Now, with the comfort of an RV, they can extend their travels, immersing themselves in the landscapes they love while maintaining the flexibility and freedom that make each journey special.

Unexpected Benefits of RV Life

One of the biggest surprises of RV life for Gabe has been the sense of community at campgrounds. Meeting people from different backgrounds and forming connections, even if just for a night, has been an incredible cultural experience.

Another unexpected benefit has been the ability to slow down and appreciate life’s simple moments. Whether it’s enjoying a quiet morning coffee, taking a slow walk, or reading a book by the fire, RVing has encouraged a more mindful approach to travel. Additionally, the lifestyle has instilled valuable lessons in patience, organization, and being present in every moment.

Most Memorable Destinations

Though new to RVing, Gabe and his family have already explored some breathtaking locations. South Dakota’s Black Hills and Badlands stand out for their rugged beauty and sense of adventure. The towering cliffs and shipwreck history of Lake Superior also left a lasting impression, making it one of their favorite destinations so far.

Looking ahead, Gabe has his sights set on the Western U.S. coast and the Cascade Mountains. The call of towering forests, dramatic landscapes, and rugged shorelines is irresistible, and he can’t wait to experience them firsthand.

A Perfect Day on the Road

For Gabe, the ideal day on the road begins with a peaceful sunrise walk and a cup of coffee, setting the tone for the day ahead. Mornings are spent exploring—whether that’s hiking, biking, or paddle boarding—while afternoons might involve discovering a local farmers market for fresh ingredients.

Evenings are a time to unwind, cook a meal with his family, and reflect on the day's adventures. As the sun sets, they relax in the camper, cherishing the day’s experiences and looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.

Planning vs. Spontaneity

When it comes to travel style, Gabe enjoys a balance of both planning and spontaneity. While he meticulously plans larger trips and photography projects, he also embraces the thrill of unplanned adventures. Some of the best experiences come from simply arriving in an area and letting the journey unfold naturally.

To stay organized, Gabe relies on Google Drive and note-taking apps, ensuring he keeps track of ideas, locations, and logistics. His background in photography and filmmaking means his travels often revolve around capturing compelling stories and breathtaking landscapes.

The Motivation Behind RV Life

Gabe’s transition to RV travel was motivated by a desire to experience the world at a slower pace and share his love of exploration with his daughter. Before parenthood, he and his wife embarked on month-long road trips, pack rafting, and backcountry expeditions. With their daughter now running around and loving the outdoors, they wanted to continue that adventurous lifestyle as a family.

Life on the Road

One of the funniest travel moments for Gabe was watching his young daughter mimic him by taking self-portraits with his camera. Seeing her pick up on photography at such a young age was both hilarious and heartwarming—a proud dad moment he’ll never forget.

Advice for Aspiring RV Travelers

For those hesitant about RV travel, Gabe’s advice is simple: just go for it. The experience is more accessible than many think, and the rewards are beyond measure. Whether you rent or buy, picking a dream destination and hitting the road is the best way to discover the magic of RV life. You’ll learn as you go, and the memories made along the way will be worth it.
