6 Types of RVs

Recreational vehicles (RVs) are a great way to create memories and have a blast experiencing new adventures, but what are the RV types that best suit your needs? We get it, purchasing an RV is a big decision, and you want to make the right choice. To offer you some peace of mind, we’ve put together this article to discuss the different types of RVs and the benefits of each model. Scroll on through our handy RV guide to get all the information you need to start your RV journey off on the right foot!

What Are the Different Kinds of RVs?

At the most basic level, there are two types of RV models, motorized and non-motorized. There are various styles or classes associated with both of these RV types - which we describe in detail below. The two most common types of trailers are known as travel trailers and fifth wheels. They each have their own separate identity as well as the method of towing them to your destination.

In the section below, we’ll take an in-depth look at the different styles of non-motorized and motorized RV types, answer some common questions and list some desirable features of each RV model.

Types of Towable Campers

Towable campers can be pulled by anything from an suv, to a minivan, etc., such as pickup trucks or large vans. These RVs are an affordable option and come in a wide variety of models, making them an ideal choice for both RV newbies and seasoned RV users.

One of the main benefits of using a towable model is that it allows you to detach your camper from your vehicle after getting settled at your campground. This gives you more freedom to explore without worrying about re-parking, which is especially convenient if you plan on camping for an extended period of time. There are many camper models and brands available.

Travel Trailers

Travel trailers are easy-to-use campers that connect to a hitch and can be pulled by any vehicle type so long as you do not exceed the towing capacity. We offer a wide range of models and camper features, making it easy for you to find a travel trailer that meets your specific needs. Our Jayco Travel Trailers come in a wide range of sizes from ultra-lite to one-ton.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TRAVEL TRAILERS?

There are many types and brands of travel trailers. Some of the most popular travel trailer shapes include:

  • Teardrop Camper: These models are small campers that are perfect for people who love the outdoors but want some of the comforts of home. Teardrop campers are ideal for small groups and aren’t the best solution if you want the whole family to come along. Our Jay Feather Micro is a far better solution and is perfect for couples and small families who love getting outdoors for a genuine camping experience without putting up a tent.
  • Truck Camper: A truck camper is a structure installed in the bed of a truck. These camper models are best used for single-person travel and when you have very few belongings to bring with you on your trip. Truck campers are also not ideal for sleeping and would be difficult to use on an extended camping trip. Although these travel trailer models can be convenient for truck owners, truck campers are not technically classified as an RV in some states like Indiana. If you have a truck and are interested in RVing we can do the same thing with a bigger outfit. Jayco offers a 2 in receiver hitch on some models, allowing for the same haul as a truck camper with relatively similar towing capacities and options.

Fifth Wheels

Need lots of space for your camping crew? Then a fifth wheel camper might be the right fit for you. Different from travel trailers, fifth wheels connect to the towing vehicle using a horseshoe shaped hitch installed in the bed of a truck or onto a large fifth wheel.

These extra spacious campers are ideal if you have a large family or group of friends who like to join in on your wilderness adventures. One of our larger fifth wheel models, the 2022 Eagle, can sleep up to 11 people.

Toy Haulers

A toy hauler is a type of travel trailer or fifth wheel that has a garage addition. Adding a garage allows you to pack all of the gear you need with ease without sacrificing luxury space in the interior of your camper. You can even store large scale items like kayaks, side-by-sides or motorcycles. This camper model is ideal for RVers who want to bring toys on the road.

What Is the Most Popular Camper?

The travel trailer model is a very popular camper that we offer at Jayco. Travel trailers come in a wide range of sizes from ultra-lite to half ton. They also have various floorplan options to accommodate families of all shapes and sizes. In fact, some of our towable units are more spacious than motorhomes. Types of Motorhomes

Our Jayco Motorhomes prioritize safety and offer seat belts in every single seat of the unit. Motorhomes run on either gas or diesel, which you should check for if you have a preference.

Class A Motorhomes

Class A RVs are the most spacious motorhome models available. Jayco Class A RVs allow you to travel with all of the comforts of home. These models come equipped with large bedroom spaces, modern bathrooms and fully functional kitchens. If you’re looking for an affordable Class A RV model, our Alante design has everything you need when it comes to drivability and comfort. The Jayco Alante model is extremely spacious and can comfortably sleep up to 8 people. You can explore our Jayco Class A RV sizes to find the fit that’s right for you.

Class B Motorhomes

Class B RV models are the smallest, but that does not mean you have to do without the most desirable conveniences! Class B motorhomes are designed as campervans, making them extremely easy and fun to drive in any setting. Jayco camper van provides you with all of the amenities you need to go out on a grand adventure.

Class C Motorhomes

Class C RVs are similar to class A motorhomes, but they come with a cab-over bunk area that can be used for storage or as an extra sleeping arrangement. Class C motorhomes are great for first-time RVers or people who are looking to trade in their towable camper for something motorized. As for Class C motorhome dimensions, our smallest models are 25' 2" in length while our largest models are 39' 4" and can sleep up to 9 people comfortably.
