For many of us, reaching for a can or two of chemically-based bug spray has become a habit when insects come out to play at night. However, there are several environmentally-friendly and cost-effective methods to help keep bugs at bay. Below are a few suggestions.
- Create your own homemade bug spray by mixing equal parts distilled water and witch hazel into a spray bottle. Add 30-50 drops of an essential oil in any desired scent (eucalyptus, lavender, mint and cinnamon are great choices).
- Rub lavender flowers or lavender oil on your skin to repel insects.
- Add sage to your campfire or firepit to keep mosquitoes and bugs away.
- Make your own citronella candles and place them around your campsite. We love this tutorial that doubles as a great recycling project using old cans.
